Commercial Passenger Boats throughout California have special partnerships with non-profit organizations that serve kids with special needs, veterans, as well as school programs. All these programs could go away if engine emission regulations proposed by the Newsom Administration make boat businesses unprofitable, or worse yet, put them out of business.
During the COVID-19 lockdowns of 2020, the U.S. and California experienced a spike in fishing participation rates as Americans were eager to enjoy the Great Outdoors again!
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) issued 1,201,237 annual resident sport fishing licenses, a 19 percent increase over 2019. Not since 2008 had CDFW issued so many. Sadly, this did not become a trend. In 2021, the number of annual license sold declined by 56,311.
The reality is California has one of the costliest fishing licenses in the country and high costs are driving down participation rates. So, why doesn't the Newsom Administration recognize that if proposed sportfishing boat engine regulations triple the cost of one-day fishing trips, fishing participation will decline even further?
It is with tremendous sadness that we convey the passing of Captain Don Hansen. We are all speechless with this loss. Don loved this fleet and spent his life defending and promoting public access to sportfishing. His leadership never slowed, his humor never dulled, and his caring never stopped.
Hansen, highly respected across the state for his experience and leadership in the fishing industry, spent his life advocating for the public’s ability to experience the ocean.
The Newsom Administration's proposed engine regulations have both commercial fishing and passenger sportfishing boat captains sounding the alarm. Vessel replacement will come first for sportfishing and whale watching boats, then commercial fishermen!
“If the regulations are adopted, fishermen who can’t afford to buy new metal vessels will go out of business in the next few years,” said Rick Powers, owner of Bodega Bay Sportfishing and president of the Golden Gate association.
If the Newsom Administration's engine regulations threaten the future of passenger sportfishing and whale watching vessels, how will millions of Californians enjoy all the splendors of the sea? #saveourboats
